Verizon’s NEW myPlan program vs Mint Mobile

Verizon recently scrapped its eight unlimited plans – Get More, Play More, Do More, Start 5G, Welcome Unlimited, and One Unlimited – to make way for its new myPlan program. Instead, they’ll only offer two unlimited postpaid plans and nine additional perk bundles that include streaming services, hotspot data, Apple Music, and more. These new plans, called Unlimited Welcome and Unlimited Plus, allow customers to choose what exactly they want out of a plan.

In this article, we plan to discuss Verizon’s myPlan program and what they offer. We’ll also cover:

  • What you should expect from the new plans
  • A full breakdown of each perk they offer
  • A comparison between Verizon’s Unlimited Welcome plan and Mint Mobile’s Unlimited plan

The Plans

Each plan includes unlimited data, but few additional features from their older plans.

Compared to their older plans, these new plans have significantly less features included. Both plans are postpaid and renewed monthly. They also include unlimited talk, text, and data in the United States as well as Canada and Mexico. However, both plans only include international texting. Other features need to be purchased through the perk bundles. Without these perks, the plans only offer the essentials. Both plans offer tiered pricing with $10 off per line when you sign up for Autopay.

Unlimited Welcome

Unlimited Welcome is the cheaper of the two new plans, being $75 per month for one line before Autopay. It does not include a hotspot. The plan’s data is also deprioritized, which means your connection will slow down in times of high traffic. The video streaming quality caps at 480p SD resolution.

Unlimited Welcome uses tiered pricing depending on the number of lines you need. One line is $75 per month, two lines are $65 per line per month, three lines are $50, and four lines or more are $40.

Unlimited Plus

Unlimited Plus is Verizon’s most expensive plan, at $90 per month for one line before Autopay discounts. Naturally, this plan includes more features. The plan includes unlimited premium data, which means it will not slow down at all – even in high traffic areas like concerts and sporting events. Unlimited Plus also includes 30GB of premium hotspot data and up to 4k Ultra HD streaming quality. The hotspot gives you unlimited slow data after the initial 30GB.

The plan also uses tiered pricing depending on how many lines you have: $90 for one line, $80 for two, $65 for three, and $55 per line for four or more. Signing up for Autopay gives you a $10 monthly discount per line.

Which plan is better?

Unlimited Plus gives you better data speeds at a better price.

While Unlimited Plus costs more, the plan offers truly unlimited data that never slows down. Hotspot data also comes included, which makes the plan more worth it overall.

The Perks

Each perk costs $10 per month, and you can add or switch between perks at any time.

Verizon offers nine different perks to choose from, each costing $10 per month. However, a family plan with the Apple One perk will cost $20 per month. You can switch between perks and add new ones to your plan at any time.

Unsure of which perks to get? Keep reading to get the full breakdown.

Disney Bundle

This perk includes a Disney+ premium membership, which means your Disney+ account will not have ads while streaming. The perk also comes with Hulu and ESPN+. However, both Hulu and ESPN+ will include ads. This plan usually costs $14.99 per month, saving you $4.99 per month with the Verizon deal.

100GB Mobile Hotspot

This perk gives you 100GB of additional data specifically allotted for a hotspot without taking from your smartphone data. If you have the Unlimited Plus plan, which comes with 30GB of hotspot data, the 100GB will be added on top of it. The data stops after 100GB, meaning you will not have unlimited slower data after this amount. This usually costs $45 per month, so the perk saves you $35 per month.

Apple One

This perk includes Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade and iCloud+. For an individual, this perk includes 50GB of iCloud+ storage. For a family plan, it includes 200GB that is shareable with up to 5 other people. The individual plan costs $16.95 normally, meaning you’ll save $6.95 per month with the perk. With a family plan, the perk costs $20 per month. A family plan directly through Apple normally costs $22.95 monthly, which means you’ll save $2.95 per month with the perk.

Apple Music Family

This perk gives you an Apple Music subscription for up to 6 people, ad free. Each user gets their own personal music library and recommendations. An Apple Music Family plan costs $16.99 per month normally, so you save $6.99 per month with this perk.

Walmart + Membership

With this perk, you’ll receive a Walmart+ membership, You’ll also receive a Paramount+ subscription, up to $0.10 off per gallon of gas at Exxon, Mobil, Walmart, and Murphy gas stations. You’ll also receive free grocery delivery on orders over $35 and free shipping with no minimum purchase amount. A Walmart+ membership alone is $12.95 monthly, so the perk will save you $2.95 per month.

Smartwatch Data & Safety

This perk includes a smartwatch data plan as well as the Care Smart app with a discount on Professional monitoring. If you tap the Get Help button or if your smartwatch reports a fall, you will be put immediately in touch with an agent. Get Help Professional Monitoring is available exclusively on select smartwatch models. This program usually costs $20 per month, so you save $10 per month with this perk.

+play Monthly Credit

With this perk, you get $15 to spend on +play subscriptions of your choice. These include Netflix, HBO Max, Paramount+, Xbox Game Pass, and more. These credits are not usable on Disney+, Apple One, Apple Music, Apple Arcade, Discovery+, Youtube TV, and other platforms included with other bundles. Unused credit does not carry over to the next month’s cycle. This usually costs $15 per month on its own, so you save $5 per month with the perk.

3 TravelPass Days

This perk includes 3 TravelPass Days per month. A TravelPass Day is unlimited international talk, text and data over a 24 hour period. This usually costs $30 per month, so the perk saves you $20 monthly.

2TB Cloud Storage

This perk gives you 2 terabytes of Verizon Cloud storage, where you can backup photos, videos, and important documents. Content you back up is accessible from both smartphones and computers. The perk allows you to invite 4 members to share the 2 TB of storage. Each member gets their own Cloud profile for privacy. This usually costs $14.99 per month, saving you $4.99 per month.

What’s the best perk?

The 100GB hotspot gives you the most savings.

Out of all of the perks Verizon offers, the hotspot data gives you the most bang for your buck. You save $35 per month and receive 100GB of hotspot data at an extremely cheap rate of $0.10 per GB.

However, other carriers – like Mint Mobile – suggest that Verizon’s new program is too expensive in general, as they say you can sign up for their Unlimited plan and your desired streaming services individually for much cheaper than Unlimited Welcome.

Verizon vs. Mint Mobile: What’s the best deal?

Mint Mobile offers a large data allotment and a hotspot at a better price.

While Unlimited Welcome does offer unlimited data, their data is always deprioritized. Mint Mobile is also deprioritized, but on a higher Quality of Service Class Identifier (QCI). A QCI tier determines the level of priority one of the big three carriers – Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile – gives to specific plans or MVNOs. Verizon’s Unlimited Welcome plan is on QCI tier 9, which is the slowest data tier. On the other hand, Mint Mobile is on QCI tier 7 with T-Mobile, which is faster. So while both plans are deprioritized, Mint Mobile is much faster overall.

Mint Mobile instead offers 40GB of data on their Unlimited plan before slowing their speeds. However, most smartphone users don’t exceed 20GB of data usage per month, according to Ericsson Mobility. 40GB is still plenty of data for users. Mint Mobile also offers 10GB of hotspot data with their plan, while the Unlimited Welcome plan requires the hotspot perk to have hotspot data.

Mint Mobile also requires you to sign up for 3 months of service at a time, so keep that in mind when choosing a plan.
